Will this be OK for traffic/construction, or should we try another route?

I have a set of Saddlemen Saddlestow saddlebags on Cyclone that I bought off Craigslist. The yoke is starting to tear on one side, so I figured I'd drop Saddlemen a line and see how much a replacement yoke was. They're going to send a replacement out for free!

Just goes to show that you never know what you'll get until you ask.

I: I recently purchased a set of what I believe to be the "performance cruiser" bags as depicted at http://www.saddlemen.com/perfcruiser_saddlestow.html from Craigslist. I notice that the material of the thingy that holds the bags on my bike (the throw-over thing that the bags attach to) is beginning to tear on one side. How much would a replacement thingy be?

KP

They: Kit,

The "thingy" you are referring to is called a Yoke. Combine that with the fact that her mother is Sandra Dickinson, who played Trillian in the BBC Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy minisereis, and you have Awesome of Rassilon.

Then you have the Hath, who are the bastard children of a fish and Pom-Pom from Homestar Runner.

I want to see more of Jenny going around the universe.
So I've decided to start a "real" blog, in an attempt to bring a little more money in. It's called Kansas City Dilettante. Go have a look! :)

Non Serviam

For an awfully long time - in fact, for about as long as I've been working for anyone besides my relatives - I've been an almost pathologically loyal employee. If you've ever heard the song "I Love My Boss" by Moxy Früvous, you'll have a pretty clear picture of what I'm talking about, though I like to think, at least, that I wasn't quite that bad.

When I came to Kansas City six months ago, I immediately started working for my current employer, a large corporation based in KC. For a while I was busy with training and getting my bearings. It was the first time I'd worked for such a large corporation, and I was full of energy and hope. I was finally getting paid something close to what I felt I was worth - my last job had been a small shop that couldn't pay a lot - and I thought my opportunities were endless. I looked forward to serving a new master.

It didn't take long until I lost all that energy and hope. I felt stifled by the corporate environment. For example, once I inadvertently said a swear word - I misremember what - in a setting where clients were present. It was a training class, and the instructor took me aside to caution me. Which was fine - she had every right to do so, and I have no problem with it. What I do have a problem with is that, the next day, I made a mistake, said "shit!" inadvertently and immediately caught myself and apologized. Instead of talking to me about it again, the instructor complained to my supervisor. Again, that was her right, but I think it was pretty obvious that it was a slip, not intentional.

Then there's the fact that I'm a programmer working in a cubicle that's attached to a pod full of non-programmers. Non-programmers who talk a lot. And this is a problem for me when I'm trying to think creatively. I need the quiet. When I complained to my boss about it, I was told that there was a place downstairs I could go. It took forever for me to get access, but finally I did, and it was great! Nice and quiet. I was finally getting some things done, and I told my boss that was where I would be most of the time from now on. Well, my boss couldn't have that - I had to be working at my desk. It's very rare that anyone comes to see me at my desk, mind you, but none the less I have to be there. I can't work from home either - it's all inviolable corporate policy.

So, in short, I'm not happy here, but I can't up and quit because I signed an agreement saying that if I quit before a year was up, I'd have to repay the $4K that DST shelled out to help me relocate in the first place. That said, I'm still looking for another job, and if necessary, I'll just eat that 4 grand. But I digress.

I'm not happy here. I don't feel that loyalty to my employer that I've been so used to feeling for all my adult life. And that really threw me. So much of my identity was bound up in that loyalty, and when that loyalty died, I think I grieved for it. It was bad enough that it kept me up at night, sent me home sick more than once, and caused me to start seeing a therapist.

But all that turmoil has caused me to realize something. This loyalty to my employer is misplaced. It's detrimental to my self-interest. My employer feels no great loyalty to me, so why should I feel any great loyalty to them? My employer is a tool that I use on my way to financial independence (my eventual goal) and nothing more.

From now on, my motto is "Non serviam" - "I will not serve". I don't work for my employer. I work for myself and my family. I do work that my employer finds useful, and in return they pay me a salary, but it's strictly a business relationship.

I swear fealty, until the day I die, to myself and myself alone. I do the will of no man, woman, child, or God but me. My service is only given to myself and those I care for.

I don't work in the aerospace industry, partly because I've never found a job in said industry, and also partly because I'm a little afraid that any job in that industry would be so full of corporate bullshit (since I think I'd have to work for a ginormous company) that all the fun would be drained out of it. Also, I don't think I have the technical background - I only did a minor in physics in college; my BS is in Comp. Sci. :) That said, I still think space travel is really neat, and I'm curious to know what neat shit we'll find out about Mercury over the next day or two. Of course, it won't be until 2011 that the craft actually enters Mercury orbit proper, and gods only know what will befall it between now and then. :)

It's traditional, I suppose, to introduce yourself in your first post. Then again, it seems to me that the whole point of describing oneself in one's userinfo is that selfsame introduction. So I'll keep the introduction brief and get on to the events of my day forthwith.

staff_kit is me and I am him. Similar to the Holy Trinity of Christianity, except there's only two of us, and the power over the whole of creation only extends to SI. Also, I'm not about to die for your sins. Sorry. You're on your own for that one. And maybe that should go in my userinfo right there...

Today was a slow day. I puttered around a bit for SI, conversed extensively with olukemi (note to olukemi: I am still discussing your request with staff_lyn) about various topics not including ships, sealing-wax, or whatever else goes in that quote. I went over to the O'Reilly Auto Parts near my house and picked up 2' of fuel line for Arcadia, my motorcycle. I couldn't remember if I needed 3/8" or 5/16" fuel line, so I guessed the latter. Lucky I was right. :)

The reason I was buying fuel line is because I had managed through being too lazy to take the fuel line off when I took the tank off, I had managed to put a kink in it. While I'm not convinced that it was impeding my fuel flow, I thought it better to replace it anyway, just in case. I cut the replacement a good bit longer than the original, as when I put the original on, I always thought I should have used a longer hose.

I also finally reattached her front side covers (the ones right below the triple tree). They had been off for a couple of months (see the saga in my LJ) while I was trying to get her running again, and I had been running her without for a couple weeks. :O. I also had a look at her rear turn signals, which are also not worky - both bulbs are broken, and on the port side, one of the wires has become disconnected. :( I'll fix it when I've got the dough. Maybe I should switch to those LED-based signals.

Later on, my friend Shauna came over. She's been staying in KC to promote this Imbolc event she's organizing, but she doesn't have a place to stay next week. So I talked it over with my wife, who's also friends with Shauna, and we're letting her stay in our spare bedroom.

Speaking of spare bedrooms, my wife and I just moved out of our bedroom into the (formerly) spare one because our previous bedroom is a converted sun porch. And the conversion hasn't held up well over time - that room gets significantly colder than the rest of the house. When it's been really cold here in KC, you can make the bed nice and warm, but the rest of the room is cold. So we decided to move into the other bedroom, which has always been a bedroom. That was a bit of work, as we had to move the bed, dresser, TV, and our nightstands in there. But now it's done, and we're not doing it again. :)

Still trying to find a new job, because I despise my current job. I'm actually thinking about switching careers entirely, but that might not be such a good idea given that I'm depressed about the fact that I hate my job.
